The village of Roquefort sur Garonne is located 25 km - East of Saint-Gaudens, 9km South-west of Cazeres, at the junction of the Salat and the Garonne rivers.
The chateau is set onto a very steep bank with a shear drop the other side.
It is located up a steep incline at an altitude of 260m, of which there is a big drop at the other side, much care must be taken when visiting this ruin.
In the 12th century, construction of the chateau begins for survailance of the 2 valleys. The Roquefort family are cited in the texts.
En 1213, during the crusade of Albigeois, the troops of Simon de Montfort takes over the chateau.
In the 14th century, the chateau is in the possession of the family of Comminges.
Into the 21st century, You may visit this site free but do note it is propriete privee, so please respect this. the risk of falling stones is very high.
