The Cistercienne de Fontcalvy is located between the communes of Cuxac and Ouveillan, The Cistercienne de Fontcalvy is the best preserved of the 24 cisterns of the Abbeye de Fontfroide.
In the XIIth century, the Cisterciens acquired a very vast territory. For the agricultural development of these places, they drained the grounds which were then marshy, to practise the breeding of sheep.
They also built the massive buildings of the Cistercienne de Foncalvy to store and protect the fruit from their agricultural work.
The barn thus resembles a true fortress. The ground floor of the barn was used for sheep-fold and as a storeroom, while the high part of the barn sheltered the food products sensitive to moisture. Each summer a festival is held there as a historical spectacle which is always a great success.
