Ballinskelligs Castle

More commonly known as McCarthy Mór Castle. It is in fact a Tower House and was built in the XVIth century by McCarthy Mór. It is thought that it's purpose was twofold. Firstly to protect the bay from pirates and also from which to charge a tariff on incoming trade ships.

Ballyannan Castle

The first building at this site was probably a castle owned by the Hodnett family. 1653, Sir John Broderick, Cromwellian settler, took possession of the estate and rebuilt the castle into a fortified Tudor mansion. the remains of this mansion that we see today. 1752, Brodericks left Ballyannan and were managing their lands through agents. 1782, estate still owned by the Brodericks, in the person of George Broderick, the 4th Viscount Midleton. 1837, the castle was said to be in ruins.

Ballycarbery Castle

Residence situated here as early as 1398 however the ruins here were constructed in the XVIth century. It was noted as a McCarthy Mor castle but whether it was occupied by the McCarthy Mors or their wardens the O'Connells is unknown. Passed onto Sir Valentine Browne following the death of Donal McCarthy More. 1652 attacked by cannon fire from Parliament forces. XVIIIth century, house built on the site using the barn wall inhabited by the Lauder family. This house was demolished in the early XXth century.

Athassel Abbey

Founded in the XIIth century, it was burnt twice, 1329 by Brian King of Thomond, again in 1581 by John Fitzgerald of Desmond. A large town had grown up around the priory but was destroyed during the two raids, it was finally dissolved in 1537 and the lands given to Thomas Butler, who neglected the abbey and it subsequently fell into ruin.

Ballinskelligs Augustinian Priory

Founded for monks who came to the mainland from Skellig Michael in the XIIth Century after numerous attacks by Vikings. The Priory was dedicated to St. Michael, as was Skellig Michael, and the monks adopted the Augustinian rule. most of the buildings here however date to the XVth century.
